For whom is the Hubble Space Telescope named?
American astronomer (a scientist specializing in the study of matter in outer space) Edwin Powell Hubble (1889-1953) was the first to detect galaxies beyond our own. He studied faint, distant patches, known as nebulae (clouds), and found they were actually large groups of stars. Hubble found that these groups of stars were so distant, they had to be beyond the bounds of our own galaxy. Hubble revolutionized astronomy by illustrating that the universe (all matter and energy including Earth, the galaxies, and the contents of space as a whole) is much larger than anyone had previously imagined, and that it is growing larger all the time.
Hubble developed a famous equation, called Hubble's Law, which describes the expansion of the universe. It establishes a distance-to-speed relationship showing that the more distant a galaxy is from our solar system, the faster...
